Amusingly, the first thing I noticed about this microscope was how heavy it is. I’m used to cheaper microscopes, and they are nowhere near as heavy as this thing is. The next thing I noticed was how smooth everything is. That’s important for a microscope, because it can be a bit difficult to focus on something microscopic when you can’t focus smoothly. I can focus on things noticeably faster than I can with a roughly $150 microscope that I usually use. If you’ve ever used a cheap, or even really just a normal microscope, you’ve spent some time trying to focusing on something. You’ll notice how much better this is the first time you focus on something. The markings on the dials are actually accurate. Most every other microscope I’ve ever used is not so good at that. If you set it to 120, then move it to 130, then go back to 120, you’ll actually be back where you started. The objectives are spring loaded. That means that if you accidentally smack into your slide, you generally won’t crack it. You probably still shouldn’t do that, but it’s nice that you don’t have to be as careful as usual.I’m not entirely sure why they are showing it using the camera that you can buy for this without mentioning that this doesn’t come with that camera. You can’t just plug this into a laptop. You see that weird thing sticking out of the middle of the microscope in that picture? That’s a camera. There’s no camera in the box. There’s a place for it, but it’s not in the box so you can’t do what it shows in the picture. It doesn’t list the camera in the parts list, but the camera was the first thing that caught my eye when I looked at this listing, and I bet I’m not alone in that. My kids also asked about that picture. There are cameras on Amazon that will fit down in there. You can also just stick your phone up there and hope for the best. That’s not going to work spectacularly well, but it’s better than nothing, I suppose. It definitely is a nice microscope. My kids are having a blast with it. I asked my 7 year old what she thought of it, and she said it’s easier to make things not blurry. In other words, even she noticed how easy it is to focus. It’s only losing a star because showing the camera on a listing with no camera is a bit misleading. I know it’s not in the parts list, but you know someone is going to order this, open the box, and think, “where camera?”
